Writing a Will
A Will is one of the most important documents that a person ever prepares.
It will let you:
- Decide who inherits - If you die without writing a Will, then the laws of intestacy
will decide who inherits your estate. This might not be as you would wish!
For example, if a man dies without having written a will, his wife may not get all of his estate.
- Decide who looks after your children - You can use a will to appoint
someone you trust as Guardian for young children. Without this, social services
would decide for you.
- Decide when your children inherit - Would you want your children to inherit a significant sum of money at age 18? That is what will happen if you don't do something about it. Using a Will,
you can nominate someone you trust to manage that money for them until they are older
and more mature.
As well as helping with the areas above, a correctly drafted Will can also help protect your property from
Long-Term care costs or
family changes.
